Our Tips on Optimizing Web Images and Graphics
Let's start with the basics. Your image's DPI, dots per inch, should never be larger than 72 when viewing an image on the Internet. If your pictures are taking a lifetime to upload, it is probably because your image has a very high dpi. This is necessary for printing, but death to your website.
How to Resize Your Image
If you are using Photoshop, you can use an incredibly helpful tool called Resize Image, which resides in the Help section of the toolbar. The program gives you a wizard to help you optimize your image. Select the Online button, and decrease your size no more than half at a time. Here's a step by step:
- Go to Help/Resize Image
- Check the Online option
- Click Next
- Type in the pixel size you want (Only go down half at a time for the best results)
- You can click the Preview button to see it
- Click Next
- Click Finish
- You can finish by going to Filter/Sharpen/Unsharpen Mask. Play with the settings to get the desired results.
